Proofreading

In proofreading, the grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. are checked. This level of revision is used for a job application or on a website, for example, where all the basic information is correct, and the customer requires a final check for any missed out or mis-spelled words, consistent use of punctuation and terms, and for formatting errors.

Editing

In editing, all the above checks are carried out, and the overall text is also considered for flow, readability and structure. Corrections are made or suggestions given to improve the text as a whole. This level of revision may be required, for example, where a non-native speaker of English has written the text for their own English website, or translated it from their own language version, but require a final edit by a native English speaker to ensure it reads like natural, fluent, idiomatic English. In marketing texts, good editing can improve the text by the use of more engaging language and by including relevant keywords for SEO optimisation, to turn an average text into a first-class one.
